Joseph Campbell (1904–1987) was a renowned American mythologist, writer, and professor, best known for his studies of comparative mythology and religion. His most influential work, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, introduced the concept of the “monomyth” or “Hero’s Journey,” a narrative pattern found in myths and stories across the world.
Campbell devoted his life to exploring the connections between myths from different cultures, examining how these narratives reflect universal aspects of the human experience. His work has had a significant influence on literature, cinema, and psychology, inspiring writers and filmmakers such as George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars franchise. His theories have also attracted criticism from scholars who have identified flaws in his interpretation of myths, as well as from those who argue that the diversity of myths is closely tied to cultural diversity. Some of this criticism has also come from conservative circles associated with the defence of religious ideas.
Campbell was also an influential populariser of mythological thought, promoting the idea of “Follow Your Bliss,” a principle that encourages individuals to pursue their dreams and passions.
