Among the many types of sociolects that exist, those associated with criminal groups and youth cultures share a common characteristic: they often employ linguistic strategies designed to conceal what is being communicated from outsiders. Verlan, which emerged in the Paris region during the 1960s, came close to entering the mainstream by the late 1970s. However, it has been continually reinvented in order to preserve its original function: confusing anyone who happens to be listening when they should not be.
