Jules Verne

Jules Verne, one of the pioneers of science fiction literature, was born in France in 1828 and revolutionised the genre with his visionary narratives. Passionate about science and discovery, Verne anticipated technological advances long before they became reality. His works are not merely thrilling adventures, but also reflections on human progress, scientific curiosity, and the limits of the unknown.

Among his most celebrated books is Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, in which he introduced the enigmatic Captain Nemo and the submarine Nautilus, a literary creation remarkably close to the vessels that would eventually be developed in the twentieth century. Another landmark work is Around the World in Eighty Days, which follows Phileas Fogg’s race against time on a journey filled with challenges. Journey to the Centre of the Earth is also a classic, taking readers on a fantastic expedition into the depths of the planet and blending science with imagination in a unique way.

His influence on science fiction and popular culture continues to be felt today. His books are still read around the world, and he was one of the earliest Western authors to achieve widespread success in Japan.

His admiration for Edgar Allan Poe, mentioned here and here, led him to write essays about the American poet and writer and inspired his desire to complete The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (1838).

Unlike his fictional counterparts, Verne was an adventurer on paper who never quite succeeded in becoming a sailor, apparently because his stomach was too sensitive to the motion of the sea. Nevertheless, once he became successful and famous, he spent long periods aboard his yachts. It was on his first boat, the Saint-Michel, that he wrote a large part of his adventure novels.
