R. Bardão

Raul Brandão was one of the most important Portuguese writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His work is distinguished by an introspective, poetic and deeply human voice. Blending social reality with an almost existential vision of life, he explored themes such as poverty, death and the human condition. Among his most significant works are The Poor, Humus and The Farce, books that helped renew Portuguese literature through an innovative and remarkably sensitive style.

Among his most singular works is The Unknown Islands, the result of a journey through the Azores at the beginning of the twentieth century. In this book, Brandão combines the eye of a chronicler with a profoundly poetic sensibility, portraying the landscapes, people and isolation of the islands in an almost mystical manner. More than a simple travel narrative, the book offers a deep meditation on nature, solitude and identity, and is today regarded as a classic of Portuguese travel literature.
