Heroines with a capital letters

Some of Joseph Campbell’s critics are former students who sought to develop and revise the ideas he proposed in The Hero with a Thousand Faces. One of these students is Maureen Murdock, who proposed an alternative cycle for female heroes in order to overcome what she saw as the passivity of women in Campbell’s original model. Another important scholar is Maria Tatar, whose work examines the many heroines found in myths, folktales, epics, and other narrative traditions.

In the videos below, you can watch and listen to Maureen Murdock discussing mythological heroines and exploring the concept of the dark feminine. You can also see Maria Tatar in an interview with The Explorers Club about her book The Heroine with 1,001 Faces.
