Places of difference and otherness can become sources of our fears, a kind of hell in potential, until we allow them to cease being foreign to us. Exploring the culture of the other, of the outsider, beyond mere exoticism, allows us to overcome the barrier of fear born of ignorance. Music is one such path, like that brought from the Tuareg desert by Tinariwen, pioneers of “desert blues.”
